Health Benefits of Grooming Your Dog
Some people might think that grooming your dog is just another fad created by those socialite people. To some extent it may be true. But if we could hear the dog speak, it will tell us that grooming has health benefits for him too. It might even take a bite in our ass to get us going to groom our pet. Here are some medical reasons why grooming dogs helps.
• Trimming the dog’s hairs will help dogs with long hair
to see well. Sometimes the hair that gets in their eyes causes irritation.
Try to have the hair drained or have the hair tied up if their hair is
irritating their eyes.
•
Dogs can suffer from chronic ear infections because of those long floppy
ears covering your dog’s ear canal that creates a warm moist environment
that lacks air circulation. Check this situation regularly as unchecked
situations can cause painful ear diseases.
•
Have the groomer shave the air inside the ear (pinna) to prevent ear
problems as removing the hair will help in air circulation.
•
Discharge, excessive scratching and foul odor are signs of an unhealthy
ear, if this occurs contact your veterinarian.
•
Check the mouth and teeth of your dog as well to prevent dental or gum
diseases.
•
There are certain products to brush the dog’s teeth, ask your veterinarian
what they are and how proper teeth grooming is done.
•
Dental diseases should be taken seriously because infections form the
mouth can be the start of all infections on other body parts.
•
Check his teeth regularly for lumps, tartar or chipping excessively.
•
Give your dog a bath every once in a while to prevent any skin disease,
fleas, ticks, etc.
•
Protect the eyes with mineral oil and the ears from cotton buds.
•
Also ask the groomer or veterinarian if the dog needs special shampoos
or something else.
•
Brush your dog at least twice a week to prevent mats. Mats can be very
irritating and can cause skin diseases. If the hair is long, everyday
brushing is needed.
•
If the dog’s hair becomes very matted, it will be best to shave
it; do not attempt to do it on your own as you might cut the skin.
•
To prevent the newly grown hair form getting tangled again brush daily.
•
Long nails are painful because they aggravate arthritis and cause the
toes to be clumsily sprayed.
•
Ask the groomer the cut it if you think it’s a hassle for you or
ask the veterinarian how to do it properly.
•
Check the anus of your dog especially if the dog is long haired. The
long hair may cause some blockage and the feces might get stuck.
•
Have the groomer cut the hair in the rear area to prevent obstruction.
•
Often check on the dog’s ass as well for parasites and ring worms
if seen, contact the veterinarian for help.
By following these grooming tips, your dog will become healthier and
you’ll learn more responsibility as well. It is up to you to take
care of your dog’s health properly by starting with his grooming.
Show your love by grooming him properly. How you groom your dog also
shows how you would take care of others too.
