Tips on Treating Your Dog
Like any human being, dogs are visited by occasional sickness and you want to leave your veterinarian with medicines to give your pet. Learning proper medication is helpful to both the dog and its master. Follow the instructions of the veterinarian. The full amount of medication must be administered over the number of days specified by the veterinarian.
Tablets & Capsules
Step 1
The pill must be placed in between the thumb and index finger of one
hand.
The thumb and index finger of the other hand must be firmly grasping
the upper jaw behind the canine teeth
Step 2
As you open the mouth, the upper lip should be gently folded over the
teeth. It lessens the chances of being bitten by the animal.
Step 3
Tilt the head upwards by rotating your wrist
The lower jaw must be opened slowly using your middle finger
Step 4
The middle finger must be kept over the small incisor and the pill
deposited as far back to the tongue.
Close the mouth as quickly as possible. While keeping your hand on
the mouth, the head must be put down to facilitate swallowing.
Step 5
Caress the throat or blow in the nostrils to support swallowing.
Liquids & Syrups
Proper dosage should be read in the label. Shaking the contents of the
bottle should be done when instructed.
Step 1
Prior to the start, the syringe or droppers must be filled with the
medicine.
Pour the liquid medication into the pouch in between the teeth and
cheek.
The closed jaw of the dog should be held while tilting the head back
slightly.
Step 2
Using the dropper or syringe, the medicine should be gently squirted
into the pouch.
Step 3
The closed mouth should be held.
Caress the throat or blow in the nostrils to support swallowing.
Step 4
Lower the head when the dog coughs out the medication.
Try again after a few minutes.
Helpful hints
Instructions must always be read carefully.
Seek the veterinarian’s advice whether the medicine should be
given with food or empty stomach. Place the pill into small concentrations
like cheese or peanut butter or a food recommended by the doctor.
Ask for assistance of a friend or any member of the family.
Never treat a dog on the floor or in your arms. A table with a non-slip
surface should be used instead.
Do not panic when treating your pet. Applying the treatment can be
difficult when your pet senses your nervousness. Complement your pet
with a treat or reward.
